From a Logo Idea to Real Momentum. The Journey of Shingatok Bookkeeping Services So Far

When I look back at the past few months, it’s incredible to see how far this business has come. What people see today the partnerships, the structure, the confidence all started from something much smaller and more personal.

Our Journey began on November 2025 with a logo idea. But not just any logo. We chose the Inukshuk to honour Kevin Shingatok heritage as an Inuit and Guyanese man, and to reflect our shared Canadian identity. The pride colours into the design represent our place in the LGBTQ2+ community a reminder that this business is built on authenticity, visibility, and belonging.

I wanted our logo to stand out, but more importantly, I wanted people to remember what we represent: honesty, integrity, and a safe space.

Turning a Vision Into a Real Firm

Once the idea took shape, the real work began.

Piece by piece, I started building Shingatok Bookkeeping Services with intention:

  • I hired a lawyer to draft a proper contract something professional, defensible, and aligned with the standards I wanted to uphold.

  • I researched platforms and invested in QuickBooks Online, knowing that the right tools matter from day one.

  • We brought in a CPA consultant to help refine our pricing so it reflected real value, not guesswork.

  • I hired my sister Caroline Mills to help build our website. She did a fantastic job.

These were all foundational the kind of decisions that turn a dream into a business. Through all of it, I was learning. Not just about bookkeeping or systems, but about myself.

Learning to Lead and Learning to Delegate

One of the biggest lessons of this journey has been understanding my own strengths and just as importantly, my limits. I learned that I don’t have to do everything myself. I learned that delegating isn’t a weakness; it’s a strategy. I learned that bringing in experts doesn’t diminish my abilities it elevates the business.

Letting go of the idea that I had to know everything or handle everything was a turning point. It allowed the business to grow faster, cleaner, and with more confidence.

The Wins Started to Build

Once the foundation was in place, momentum started to show up in bigger ways.

  • Partnering with ADP - I was reached out by Abdel Boughaleb to partner up with Payroll. This was a huge milestone that validated the systems, professionalism, and consistency we’ve been building.

  • Becoming a Member of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce - This one seems very surreal. But this is how it happened. I reached out to Mandy Rennehan and initially congratulated her on receiving the order of Canada. I really look up to her and I think she is an amazing woman. I told her about our business and she referred me to Darrell Schuurman. I will be honest I never heard of CQCC at the time. But after looking into this I thought this is perfect way to get our name out there. I am extremely grateful for Mandy for making this connection. After we were approved for our application for membership, a moment of pride stepping into a national network.

Still Moving Forward

What started as a logo idea in November 2025 has grown into a real, credible, evolving firm one that continues to move forward with clarity and purpose. I’ve learned more about myself in these months than I expected. I have the resilience, capacity to build, the ability to adapt, and my willingness to grow.

The best part is that this journey is still unfolding. The foundation is strong, the momentum is real, and the vision is only getting clearer. Shingatok Bookkeeping Services is just getting started.
